Ben Stiller & Cate Blanchett To Star In Spy Movie

Ben Stiller and Cate Blanchett in The Champions

The Champions is based on the British spy film. Following Sean Connery’s successful debut as James Bond in Dr. No in 1962, spy TV shows such as The Avengers (not Marvel’s), Get Smart, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and Mission: Impossible quickly became popular in the 1960s. Another thing that all four of those shows have in common (to varying degrees of success) is that they have all been adapted as major motion pictures since the 1990s (though only Mission: Impossible became its own film franchise, with the 7th movie coming out next year on September 30, 2022). The British series The Champions, which lasted only one season and 30 episodes, was one of the more forgotten shows in that batch.

In 2008, Champions was being adapted as a film (at the time with Guillermo del Toro), and it’s finally close enough to filming that two stars have been attached. The Champions, based on the British spy show about three agents who are given “enhanced intellectual and physical abilities” by “an advanced civilization secretly living in Tibet,” has Cate Blanchett (who will also direct and produce) and Ben Stiller (who will also direct and produce) attached to star. Previous films directed by Ben Stiller include Reality Bites, The Cable Guy, and Zoolander.
