My favorite character on the Love Boat died Friday, Gavin MacLeod. Gavin who was the “Love Boat” captain and my favorite captain on television at the time also starred in the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Both of these shows would be his claims to fame. However, McLeod did a lot more than those shows. He was a a G.I. in Gregory Peck’s Pork Chop Hill, Blake Edwards’ WWII comedy Operation Petticoat, with Cary Grant and Tony Curtis, and had a minor role in Mchale’s Navy. Blake Edwards brought Gavin back for his delightful musical High Time, which starred Bing Crosby and Fabian.
In 1961, he appeared on the Dick Van Dyke Show, his first time working with Mary Tyler Moore. Where they would later make him a part of the show.
In 2013, his memoir, This Is Your Captain Speaking: My Fantastic Voyage Through Hollywood, Faith & Life, was put into circulation.
Gavin MacLeod is survived by his wife, actress Patti Kendig and his four children from a previous marriage.
