Matrix: Resurrections Flops Hard In China

The Matrix Resurrections, produced by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow, had a rocky start at the Chinese box office over the weekend, collecting only $7.5 million from Friday to Sunday.

In China, massive piracy and a negative reaction among local moviegoers hampered Lana Wachowski’s fourth installment in The Matrix saga.
Since its simultaneous release on HBO Max and in theaters on December 22, Resurrections has been freely available on Chinese piracy networks.
Worse even for the franchise’s future chances in China, local viewers appear to dislike the revival, with a 7.5 on Alibaba’s flagship ticketing service Tao Piao Piao, 7.4 on Maoyan, and 5.7 on Douban. Every major Chinese film now in theaters has received much higher reviews.

The worldwide total for Resurrections has now reached $140 million, with $104.2 million coming from international areas.
The film is said to have cost $190 million or more to produce, not including marketing.
