A psychological thriller adapted from John Searles’ novel. The Chase family has experienced a terrible accident. 5 years after that tragic accident, the oldest son’s girlfriend appears at the doorstep with a special delivery. She is three months pregnant and claims it is the deceased older son’s. In disbelief, the Chase family asks her to leave. However, after some convincing by the younger son, the mother decides that it’s a possibility the child could be the older son’s child.
The Chase family youngest boy dies in a terrible accident. 5 years after that tragic accident, the young son’s girlfriend appears at the doorstep with a special delivery. She is three months pregnant and claims it is the deceased younger son Ronnie’s. In disbelief, the Chase family asks her to leave. However, after some convincing by the older son Phillip, the mother decides that it’s a possibility the child could be the younger son’s child with frozen sperm.
At any rate, Phillip does the right thing and tries to treat Melissa decently, partly because Philip and Melissa had a connection before the accident. The movie progresses and starts to show a strange relationship with Melissa and her adopted parents Bill and Gail Erwin. Melissa was staying with Bill and Gail because her parents didn’t want her there with the crazy idea that the baby is Ronnie’s baby. Bill couldn’t have children with Gail, so there is a sense of frustration there that is palatable as well as the fact that Bill is still smoking and Gail doesn’t like it because he is sick. Bare with me, a lot of stories flying around here. Not to mention the fact that Melissa has been having blackouts while staying by Bill and Gail.
To further extend the suspicious behavior of all of the characters, Charlene calls Richard’s new wife and asks to speak with him, new wife not knowing it Charlene, tells Charlene he is coming to visit her to help her understand why he was still in contact with Melissa. Richard has also been paying her lodge fee over at Bill and Gail’s place. Phillip and Melissa go to the woods outside of the lodge and talk about Ronnie and his leg injury, which was a result of Ronnie’s death.
After their talk, Phillip leaves Melissa in the house and leaves to go back. While Melissa is in the lodge, she goes into labor and her water breaks. Meanwhile, Bill and Gail are having a talk about Bill smoking cigarettes but she tells him that she has found the cigarettes in an empty bottle of Rohypnol. Bill tries to tell her he couldn’t help himself and that he is sorry. Gail is sickened by the situation and tries to get away from Bill but he pushes her down the stairs and she breaks her neck. Phillip can’t hear Melissa right away until she breaks the window. Knowing that something is very wrong, Phillip limps back to lodge. They both get into the car to go to the hospital when Melissa asks Phillip to ask Bill and Gail to come along. Phillip knocks on the main house door, but no one is answering.
Finally, he goes in only to discover that Bill has accidentally killed his wife. Phillip runs before there is time to explain. Bill gets his shotgun and pursues Phillip into the woods. Melissa cannot wait any longer, and has to drive herself to the hospital. So Philip, doing his best to hide and find a place in the woods, hides for a while, but he is injured from his earlier accident so he is struggling. Bill, who obviously is a good Hunter, eventually finds Philip, knocks him out and kidnaps him. Charlene and Richard show up at Bill’s house looking for Philip. They knock on the door and there’s no answer so they assume he’s not there. Wandering around the property Charlene and Richard find a piece of Philip’s clothing which increases their concern that there is something wrong with Phillip. They go back to the property and knock again, this time Bill answers. They asked him where Phillip is and Bill says he does not know.
Once again leaving the property that they hear a loud noise, which is Phillip trying to escape. Running to the barn where Bill has Philip tied up, they discover an injured Philip. Bill goes to the barn as well and confronts Richard. They tussle and Richard is knocked down. The next scene is Bill pointing the gun at Philip, you hear a gunshot and the screen goes black. The end of the movie is just Melissa giving birth in the hospital to some sad faces. Obviously we think that Philip is dead, however, it is the opposite as the family is accepting the new child as their own. For me, that’s kind of a stale ending I think they could have done it better
Although I like this film, I think it could have been made more tightly packed. Margaret Qualley gives a very good performance and acts like she has been acting all of her life. This is the type of psychological thriller that waits to give you the punchline. There is a general malaise about the film that gives the thought that there is more going on than there is. Including a lot of twists and turns. The wait and see approach doesn’t really work for this movie because the personal conflict doesn’t match up with the mystery of why she would have a baby 5 years later.
