The first trailer for Sony’s planned live-action film version of Uncharted, the renowned and critically acclaimed video game adventure series, has finally been revealed. The film has been in development for several years, with the first reports of a film adaptation dating back to 2008. This edition of the project has been in development since 2017, and we’re now receiving our first trailer for Uncharted.
I’m undecided about this movie in general. Even though Drake is in his mid-30s to early-40s in the games, Sony chose Tom Holland because of his youthful charm. From a financial standpoint, this makes sense. If you believe this will be a long-running series, cast the hot young actor who has already proven himself in the Spider-Man films. However, as a fan of the games, I find this odd. Holland appears to be too young for the part, and while everything around him is reminiscent of Uncharted, he appears to be cosplaying as Drake. But keep in mind that someone who hasn’t played the game (which Sony believes to be the majority of the audience for this film) won’t recognize Drake, so they’ll probably be good with Holland.
Uncharted portrays Tom Holland as a youthful Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan, who has lost his mustache. Ruben Fleischer (Venom) directs the film, which is slated to act as a prequel to the action-adventure games by Naughty Dog Studios and creator Amy Hennig, and is based on a narrative by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (who previously penned Iron Man and… Transformers: The Last Knight).
Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) plays Braddock, Sophia Ali (Grey’s Anatomy) plays Chloe Frazer, and Antonio Banderas plays an unnamed character in the film. This is only the first of several Sony games to be adapted into live-action films. The Last of Us is being adapted into an HBO series, while Netflix is developing both a live-action and an anime series based on the Assassin’s Creed property, as well as both anime and live-action Resident Evil TV shows.
Uncharted is scheduled to be released before summer 2022. I hope this is the case. The date is set to February 18, 2022.
